These be the wordswhich Mosesspakeunto all Israelon this sideJordanin the wilderness, in the plainover againstthe Red sea , between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
( There are elevendays'journey from Horebby the wayof mountSeirunto Kadeshbarnea.)
And it came to pass in the fortiethyear, in the eleventhmonth, on the first day of the month, that Mosesspakeunto the childrenof Israel, according unto all that the LORDhad given him in commandment unto them;
Afterhe had slainSihonthe kingof the Amorites, which dweltin Heshbon, and Ogthe kingof Bashan, which dweltat Astarothin Edrei:
On this sideJordan, in the landof Moab, beganMosesto declarethis law, saying,
The LORDour Godspakeunto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dweltlong enoughin this mount:
Turnyou, and take your journey, and goto the mountof the Amorites, and unto all the places nighthereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the seaside, to the landof the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the greatriver, the riverEuphrates.
Behold, I have setthe landbeforeyou: goin and possessthe landwhich the LORDswareunto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to giveunto them and to their seedafter them.
And I spakeunto you at that time, saying, I am not ableto bearyou myself alone:
The LORDyour Godhath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this dayas the starsof heavenfor multitude.
(The LORDGodof your fathersmake you a thousandtimesso many more as ye are , and blessyou, as he hath promised you!)
Howcan I myself alone bearyour cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
Takeyou wisemen, and understanding, and knownamong your tribes, and I will makethem rulers over you.
And ye answeredme, and said, The thingwhich thou hast spoken is good for us to do.
So I tookthe chiefof your tribes, wisemen, and known, and madethem headsover you, captainsover thousands, and captainsover hundreds, and captainsover fifties, and captainsover tens, and officersamong your tribes.
And I chargedyour judgesat that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judgerighteously between every manand his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
Ye shall not respectpersonsin judgment; but ye shall hearthe smallas well as the great; ye shall not be afraidof the faceof man; for the judgment is God': and the causethat is too hardfor you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
And I commandedyou at that timeall the thingswhich ye should do.
And when we departedfrom Horeb, we went throughall that greatand terriblewilderness, which ye sawby the wayof the mountainof the Amorites, as the LORDour Godcommandedus; and we cameto Kadeshbarnea.
And I saidunto you, Ye are comeunto the mountainof the Amorites, which the LORDour Goddoth give unto us.
Behold, the LORDthy Godhath setthe landbeforethee: go up and possess it , as the LORDGodof thy fathershath saidunto thee; fearnot, neither be discouraged.
And ye came nearunto me every one of you, and said, We will sendmenbeforeus, and they shall search us outthe land, and bringus wordagainby what waywe must go up, and into what citieswe shall come.
And the sayingpleased me well: and I tooktwelvemenof you, oneof a tribe:
And they turnedand went upinto the mountain, and cameunto the valleyof Eshcol, and searched it out.
And they tookof the fruitof the landin their hands, and brought it downunto us, and broughtus wordagain, and said, It is a goodlandwhich the LORDour Goddoth give us.
Notwithstanding ye wouldnot go up, but rebelledagainst the commandmentof the LORDyour God:
And ye murmuredin your tents, and said, Because the LORDhatedus, he hath brought us forthout of the landof Egypt, to deliverus into the handof the Amorites, to destroy us.
Whither shall we go up? our brethrenhave discouragedour heart, saying, The people is greaterand tallerthan we; the cities are greatand walled upto heaven; and moreover we have seenthe sonsof the Anakims there.
Then I saidunto you, Dreadnot, neither be afraid of them.
The LORDyour Godwhich goethbeforeyou, he shall fightfor you, according to all that he didfor you in Egyptbefore your eyes;
And in the wilderness, where thou hast seenhow that the LORDthy Godbarethee, as a mandoth bearhis son, in all the waythat ye went, until ye cameinto this place.
Yet in this thingye did not believethe LORDyour God,
Who wentin the waybeforeyou, to search you outa placeto pitch your tents in , in fireby night, to shewyou by what wayye should go, and in a cloudby day.
And the LORDheardthe voiceof your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
Surely there shall not oneof these menof this evilgenerationseethat goodland, which I swareto giveunto your fathers,
SaveCalebthe sonof Jephunneh; he shall seeit, and to him will I givethe landthathe hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath whollyfollowedthe LORD.
Also the LORDwas angrywith me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not goin thither.
But Joshuathe sonof Nun, which standethbeforethee, he shall go inthither: encouragehim: for he shall cause Israelto inherit it.
Moreover your little ones, which ye saidshould be a prey, and your children, which in that dayhad no knowledgebetween goodand evil, they shall go inthither, and unto them will I giveit, and they shall possess it.
But as for you, turnyou, and take your journeyinto the wildernessby the wayof the Redsea.
Then ye answeredand saidunto me, We have sinnedagainst the LORD, we will go upand fight, according to all that the LORDour Godcommandedus. And when ye had girdedon every manhis weaponsof war, ye were readyto go upinto the hill.
And the LORDsaidunto me, Sayunto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not amongyou; lest ye be smittenbeforeyour enemies.
So I spakeunto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelledagainst the commandmentof the LORD, and wentpresumptuouslyupinto the hill.
And the Amorites, which dweltin that mountain, came outagainstyou, and chasedyou, as beesdo, and destroyedyou in Seir, even unto Hormah.
And ye returnedand weptbeforethe LORD; but the LORDwould not hearkento your voice, nor give ear unto you.
So ye abodein Kadeshmanydays, according unto the daysthat ye abode there .
